Invitation to Lecture by Carl Phillips – April 7, 2026, 4:30pm ET – on Zoom

The UMass Amherst Department of Classics invites CANE members to join in remotely for a lecture by the renowned poet, Carl Phillips. As our 2026 David Grose Memorial Lecturer, Professor Phillips will share his work and reflections on a fascinating career. He is the author of 17 books of poetry and received the Pulitzer Prize in 2023 for his book, Then the War: And Selected Poems 2007-2020. He has won many other poetry awards as well and his poems are frequently featured in the Best American Poetry series that appears annually. Aspects of the ancient world are frequently featured in his poems (such as this poem). In 2003 he published a translation of Sophocles’ Philoctetes for OUP.
