J.A.C.T. LATIN SUMMER SCHOOL ANNOUNCES TWO-WEEK RESIDENTIAL LATIN COURSES IN THE UK (www.latincamp.co.uk)
2025 DATES – SUN 20TH JULY to SAT 2ND AUGUST
Join approximately 160 students from all over the world for a residential course in Latin which includes 3 daily lessons, grammar clinics, trips, guest lectures, all with like-minded people who want a full immersion into the Classics. This summer we return once again to the beautiful spa town of Harrogate (https://visitharrogate.co.uk/) in the north of England. Our website www.latincamp.co.uk gives full details on all that we offer and I attach our fliers for 2025, the 2024 daily routine and programme of lectures (with some details on who our speakers are), grammar clinics, trips and events which will give you an immediate idea of what we are about. This is also an excellent opportunity for anyone whose first language is not English, to practise and refine it.
We work every year with international students of all ages and even professors from classical and other disciplines. Our aim, in short, is to support the Latin learning of as many students as possible, regardless of experience or background. Our main focus (other than for the complete beginners) is on increasing fluency and reading more widely, providing an additional confidence in the language and interest in the literature. The tutors are all highly qualified subject specialists who are practising Classics teachers from some of the UK’s leading schools.
Travel within the UK is easy – Leeds Bradford is the nearest airport; you can take a bus from there to Leeds station then a direct train (35-40 minutes) to Harrogate. Alternatively, previous students have flown into London airports from any of which Harrogate can be reached very easily by train. We will also be offering a coach service from central London up to Harrogate if students are able to coincide their flight arrivals with this.
At our core is the intensive preparation and reading of Latin texts. This happens formally in small teaching sets of very similar ability and experience but far more unquantifiable learning happens in all the “in-between” moments, be they in groups between lessons sat out in the sun, or at night in the boarding houses. But Latin Camp is about so much more than just reading Latin. It’s about the camaraderie of meeting like-minded people. It’s about bonding in the houses. It’s about witnessing the interaction of staff, students and speakers. It’s about the joy of the Hellenic Bookservice visiting and setting up their shop just for us. It’s about the quiz, the site visits, the staff play, the costume party. It’s about discovering, identifying with and joining a wider community of classicists, making contacts and friends for life.
