Programming Update

The CANE Executive Committee wanted to take this opportunity to update you, the membership, on developments related to programming in general and the Summer Institute.

As many of you are aware, the Executive Committee voted in the spring of last year to suspend CSI 2024 to reevaluate the scope, logistics, and cost of running this intensive event. In wake of that decision, the Executive Committee also voted to form an ad hoc committee tasked with evaluating all of CANE’s programming by January 2024.

At the Executive Committee meeting Saturday, January 20th, 2024, the ad hoc committee delivered a summary of their report, which members can view here:

The ad hoc committee did a thorough job looking at both short and long term goals and aspirations for the organization, including many items that are actionable now and ones that will require more careful thought and planning over multiple years if the organization should choose to pursue them.

In wake of those recommendations, the Executive Committee voted to create two separate ad hoc committees tasked with specific goals for the 2024-25 fiscal year, building off of the recommendations in the aforementioned report. One committee will be focused on bringing a small number of unique events, both in-person and virtual, to CANE members throughout the year.

The second committee is tasked with creating a draft structure for what a reimagined 2025 CSI could look like to serve as a starting point for the next director and steering committee, that’s based on a fiscally sustainable model. The work of this committee is expected to be short term and completed prior to the September Executive Committee meeting, allowing the next director and steering committee ample time to work on building out the exciting content for the 2025 Summer Institute.

It is also our hope that this work will pave the way for greater involvement from the membership in helping shape all of our programming. In the near future, be on the lookout for interest forms and other ways to become involved in CANE’s various endeavors.
