Incredible, Edible Exhibits!

Who doesn’t like something to eat during class? Susan Zoller had students research and make edible projects. She says: We have eaten them in class! Examples: Colosseum, Pont du Gard, Rialto Bridge, Circus Maximus. Students absolutely loved doing this. Rice Krispy treats are used a lot. The creativity is amazing. I’ve also done Roman Roads in a see-through container: each student used edible layers to depict the layers in the road – there was brown sugar, rock candy and even Oreos on top! Of course, with the myriad allergies around, you have to be careful, and just say “no peanuts” etc. to be on the safe side.

Ruth Breindel adds: Students were graded not only on the visual aspect, but also on how it tasted! Some of the best I had: a Caesar salad with tomato heads, celery soldiers and cucumber slices for shields; a cake Carthage sitting in blue Jello; for Catullus 64, a bag with Tootsie pops all wrapped except for one which wasn’t, so that one was not chosen!
