Antiquity in Media Studies Conference December 11-12

ANTIQUITY IN MEDIA STUDIES is holding our first-ever virtual conference, and you’re invited!

via Zoom on 11-12 December 2020, Eastern Standard Time

AIMS is a newly organized group of scholars who collaborate on research, pedagogy, and outreach activities that examine and enrich how people around the world engage with the concept and contents of “antiquity” in a variety of media. Since our inception via the Classical Antiquity section of the Film & History conference, we have been expanding our focus to include the wider Mediterranean world, with the goal of welcoming engagements with antiquities from around the globe.

In recognition of the ever-greater ubiquity of screens in our professional lives under COVID, this year’s conference focuses on receptions through screen-media platforms, including film, television, streaming video, video games, and social media. Our closing session features remarks on the state of Classical Reception Studies by Monica S. Cyrino (University of New Mexico, Albuquerque) and Antony Augoustakis (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign).

The detailed program, abstracts, code of conduct, and other information are available at the conference website:

https://classics.domains.skidmore.edu/aims/

Registration for the conference is free, and required for all participants. Zoom join-codes and passwords will be sent to registrants.

Registration is available by this form and through the conference website.

Questions about registration and the conference may be directed to Roger Macfarlane, Secretary-Treasurer of AIMS.

The 2021 CANE Annual Meeting

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the upcoming CANE annual meeting will be a virtual meeting via Zoom on consecutive Saturdays, March 13th and 20th, in 2021. Registration will be required to attend this virtual meeting, and more information about the meeting will emerge in the coming months.

Please use this link to submit your proposal for an individual paper, workshop, or panel of papers by December 15, 2020. The ability to submit a panel of papers is a new feature of the 2021 annual meeting. This grants the opportunity for a group of 3 to 4 presenters to submit papers on a pre-established topic or theme. Please note also that up-to-date CANE membership is a requirement to submit a proposal, so please join CANE or renew your membership if you have not already.

Please also note the many award and scholarship opportunities that CANE has to offer, including our annual writing contest for regional high school students, and an award to cover the cost of meeting registration for first-time attendees. I especially encourage you to submit nominations for the Matthew I. Wiencke Teaching Award for a primary, middle, or secondary school teacher!
