What can CANE do for you?

As you look at the membership form, you may find yourself wondering what CANE can do for you. There are a wide variety of resources available to CANE members.

CANEPress

CANEPress, the publishing arm of CANE, publishes books and downloadable materials on Greek, Latin, Classics, and pedagogy. Titles include the classic Latin: How to Read It Fluently and our newest book, English Derivatives from Greek and Latin Roots.. CANEPress is also happy to talk with any authors who would be interested in having a book on Greek, Latin, Classics, or pedagogy published. Please feel free to contact CANEPress.

Scholarships

CANE offers a wide variety of scholarships. If you want to travel or fund further education in Classics, there are options to help you out.

JSTOR

All CANE members have free access to a subset of JSTOR articles. Go to the log-in link and enter your access code. If you don’t have the access code, it can be requested from Ruth Breindel. (Or you can leave a comment and we’ll help you.) Your membership, though, must be confirmed and up-to-date.

NECJ

The New England Classical Journal is seeking articles for submission. Submissions should focus in two areas. First, we seek academic articles on topics concerning the ancient Greek and Roman world, researched, with footnotes and bibliography. The focus of the submission, whether literary or historical, should be fairly central to the field of Classical Studies. Second, we seek pedagogical articles with broad focus. We encourage submissions which consider the various ways in which a pedagogical approach can help the classroom, rather than a description of a particular exercise or class. We encourage, but do not require, submissions from the New England area and from all levels in the field, collegiate and secondary. All submissions should be submitted as an attachment via email, in Word, with footnotes and bibliography. All Greek should be typed in Unicode. All submissions, once accepted, will be sent out for double blind review.

CANE Writing Contest

The CANE Writing contest is a great opportunity for your students to engage with the larger Classical world. Certificates are available for the top three finishers in each state.

Classics in the Curriculum

If a Latin program is in danger of being shut down or defunded, Classics in the Curriculum can help you save it.

Discretionary Funds and Grants

As well as scholarships, there are discretionary funds and

Educational Programs Grants to help teachers pay for classroom materials and bring in speakers.

CANE Emporium

Beyond CANE

  • Registration for the MaFLA summer institute is open, as is super saver registration for the Fall Conference.
  • The Department of Classics at Tufts University is seeking a part-time lecturer to teach four courses in academic year 2013-2014. The two courses to be taught in the fall semester are first-semester Latin and third-semester Latin. The latter is an intermediate-level course designed to review the principles of Latin grammar and to introduce students to such Latin authors as Ovid, Petronius, and Apuleius. The two courses to be taught in the spring semester will be determined in September. MA required; ABD or PhD preferred. Experience teaching ancient language at the college level preferred.
