Announcements for the Week of 18 August

American Philological Association
The APA is requesting proposals for new courses. The deadline is November 1, 2013. More information here.
American Academy in Rome
By the end of the summer, the American Academy in Rome will make available online the
application forms for the 2013-2014 Rome Prize competition.
The American Academy in Rome is the oldest American overseas center for independent study and advanced research in the arts and the humanities.
For one hundred years the Academy’s eleven acre center in Rome has provided an inspiring environment for those who practice the fine and liberal arts.
The Rome Prize is awarded annually to about thirty candidates, each selected by a jury of distinguished peers through a national competition.
The winners are invited to Rome to pursue their work for periods ranging from six months to two years. They are provided with stipends, residential accommodation, meals, private studies or studios, and most important, an atmosphere conducive to intellectual and artistic freedom, interdisciplinary exchange, and innovation.
Attached is the 2014 Rome prize poster, which gives pertinent information about the fellowship fields, the availability of the online application forms, and the deadlines.
Deadline is November 1, 2013.
Vergilian Society

The Vergilian Society is soliciting proposals for the Twenty-First Annual Symposium Cumanum, to take place at the Villa Vergiliana in Cuma at the end of June, 2015.  We will consider a proposal on any theme pertaining to Virgil and his times, although preference may be given to a subject that has not been treated recently.  Descriptions of recent symposia can be found on the Vergilian Society website, www.vergiliansociety.org >> Symposium Cumanum >> Publications & Previous Symposia or at http://tiny.cc/1tp30w.

Each proposal should be prepared by the person who is intending to direct the symposium, or by the lead person if co-directors are envisioned.  The successful director will have logistical assistance from the Vergilian Society’s Italian staff and from the executive committee; a set of guidelines is available to assist in planning.

Proposals should be 250-300 words in length, giving a brief rationale for the theme, some thoughts on what kinds of subjects are likely to be treated, and the names of several scholars who have worked on this theme and might be approached to participate.  As international meetings, our symposia attract participants from all over the world, but since the Vergilian Society is an Italian-American cultural association, we are especially interested in seeing solid participation from scholars in these two countries.

Proposals should be submitted electronically by 1 October 2013 to the president of the Vergilian Society, Craig Kallendorf, at kalendrf@tamu.edu.   Any questions can also be directed to Professor Kallendorf.  Proposals will be considered at the fall meeting of the executive committee, after which everyone who has submitted a proposal will be contacted.
