CANE Summer Institute Free Public Lecture Series

Though it is too late to sign up for our annual Summer Institute, many public lectures will be given during the week of July 13th through the 18th. They are held at Brown University, and there are many days featuring both a morning and evening lecture. This is a great opportunity to hear topics surrounding the theme of “Exegi Monumentum: Creating the Everlasting in the Ancient World.” Please see the attached poster for more information or contact canesummerinstitute2015 at gmail.com.

Here are some of the articles and items of interest we’ve seen on the Web this week!

  • The Smithsonian has an article on Pompeii and the troubles it’s been having.
  • Did you miss the ACL Institute in Storrs, CT?  Chris Buczek has compiled a Google doc full of links to presentations given there!
  • Elliot Goodman’s National Latin Survey is now releasing its results, and there is sure to be conversation and controversy!
  • Popular Archaeology has an article talking about a 3-D imagining project mapping Ammaia, a Roman town in Portugal.  Note that the full article and video is accessible only through a paywall.
  • The Villia Domitia is open again after 15 years.  Go visit a Neronian family home on your next trip to Tuscany!
  • Finally, an unusual request for Harvard admission documented in 1891, brought to you by the Harvard Crimson.

The CANE Summer Institute will begin on July 13 at Brown, just a few short weeks from now.  We look forward to seeing friends old and new!

BEYOND CANE

  • This year’s MaFLA Summer Institute will be held August 14-16 at the Winslow Academic Center at Lasell College in Newton, MA.  This year features a full Latin track for all three days!  Click the link for registration information and a full schedule.
  • Fabulous offerings from ASCANIUS Youth Classics Institute, including exploratory ‘Latin Summer’ for kids
    in Boston, Birmingham, Northern Virginia and Rome.
  • The Boston Area Classics Calendar has a lot going on, and a weekly email digest of upcoming events.

Certamina et Dies Classici et Eventus!

  • Registrations are now being accepted for this year’s summer programs organized by the Vergilian Society.  The details of these tours can be found here.
