Proposed Changes to the CANE Constitution

Over the past year, the Executive Committee has spent a great deal of time revising the Classical Association of New England’s Constitution and Bylaws in an effort to clean up and modernize our governing documents. The Executive Committee voted to adopt the revised document on February 1st, 2020. This document will now require approval by a membership vote at the Annual Meeting to be held at Trinity College in Hartford, CT during the Business Meeting on Friday, March 13th, 2020.

A summary of the changes is as follows, though it is important to note that there were absolutely no changes to the governance of the organization, the election of the officers, the financial management and obligations of the organization, the auditing process and procedures, and the powers of the membership body with respect to dissolution, resolutions, and other oversight activities.

  • Lifetime Membership has changed to twenty-times the current membership fee (a change from the outdated $500 fee.)
  • New members will no longer receive 2nd year of membership for free. This, as a practice, hasn’t been the case for decades.
  • Newsletter Editor has been renamed to Media Coordinator, reflecting the combined nature of Webmaster and the Newsletter.
  • Classics in Computing has been removed as an office and committee.
  • Awards Committee with the chair being the immediate past-president has been added to streamline organization of the various awards. No changes to how awards are decided, but rather to have a point person to ensure that necessary steps are taken on the appropriate schedule.
  • Educational Programs description has been updated to reflect current practice.
  • Classics in Curricula description has been updated to reflect current practice.
  • Many committee functions/descriptions were removed to be explained in greater detail in the Executive Manual. This was done to provide greater flexibility and adaptability for committee charges and is common practice in other organizations. This does not include the Executive Committee, Finance Committee, Nominating Committee, Auditors, Program and Local Arrangements Committee, or Resolutions Committee. It seemed these particular committees are not as malleable and should be rightfully detailed in the Constitution and By-laws.
  • Other language throughout the Constitution was cleaned up and modernized.
